We are getting ready to get hit with another huge mass of cold and dangerous weather - this one storm system spans from New Mexico all the way to Maine - Fully 3/4 of the width of the United States. A cold air mass from the north and a pair of warm air masses from the south are going to combine and coat 100,000,000 people with snowfalls up to 2 feet, and other will get as much as an inch of ice coating everything.
So! I guess that means we don't have to worry about Global "Warming" any more, huh? Ok...In six words - Nooooooooooooooooooooo - That is NOT what is means.
Global Warming does not imply that we will no longer need a winter coat in New York every Christmas (although I wish it did). It doesn't mean Montreal will suddenly become Aruba (although I wish it did).
The common misperception starts with the term "Warming". This was the simple term given to this phenomenon way back when. Global Warming SHOULD have originally been called Global Imbalance.
Global Warming occurs when something (A Volcano, A Crack in the Earth, Factories in China, Fossil Fuel Burning in the United States and Europe, and massive Cow Flatuence in India) releases large amounts of carbon dioxide gas into the Earth’s atmosphere. This type of gas is odorless and tasteless – but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist, and it doesn’t mean it’s harmless. The average temperature on earth was much warmer in the time of the dinosaurs because of a higher level of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere – as much as 50 degrees hotter than today.
When huge amounts of carbon dioxide are added to the atmosphere, this gas acts like a thermal blanket – trapping heat in the atmosphere (that’s why they called it “Warming”). This additional warm air doesn’t increase the temperature of our air – it interacts with cold air – and THAT is where the danger to human life occurs.
Whenever a warm air mass collides with a colder air mass it causes Cyclones, Hurricanes, and Tornadoes. These severe storms are the atmosphere’s way of “balancing” itself out – this is not a theory. Scientists have know this for decades.
The northern polar cap is vanishing at a rate of 8% to 10% per year. It is now the smallest it’s ever been since it’s mass started being recorded in 1979. Again – that’s not politics, not theory, not hysteria. It’s a fact. As that polar ice cap melts – some (not all) of the water that evaporates causes more frequent and more severe rain and snow events. You may have noticed we’ve had 8 blizzards in the Northeast in the past 13 months – all of them huge and based on what some parts of the country are going to be hit with – they may be getting even bigger - although that is definitely NOT indicative of a trend. Now if we had another 10 or even 20 snowstorms of increasing severity - THAT would indicate a trend.
It’s also true that the average temperature of the planet in 2010 ended in a three-way tie for the hottest ever (tied with 2005 and 1998). And in my opinion, it’s no coincidence that 2010 was also the wettest on record.
For those of you who already believe we've got trouble - Please feel free to augment. for those of you who don't - PLEASE share your scientific evidence disputing anything I state above. I will keep an open mind if you will!!
